The Health Challenges of Urban Latino College Students as Revealed Through Student Journaling

   Abstract

Abstract: Because of the unique health risks faced by the Hispanic population and the notoriously poor health habits of college students, this study examines the health challenges faced by Latino college students enrolled at an urban commuter institution. A thematic analysis reveals the top themes for males and females as healthy eating, weight management, and exercise. Alcohol use management is a theme for males, whereas stress management is found as a theme for females.

Resumen: Este estudio examina los retos de salud que encaran los estudiantes universitarios latinos que asisten instituciones de educación superior urbanas debido a los riesgos de salud únicos que la población hispana encara así como a los notorios hábitos pobres de salud de estudiantes universitarios. Un análisis temático reveló los temas fundamentales para hombres y mujeres: alimentación saludable, manejo del peso, y ejercicio. El manejo del uso de alcohol fue un tema para hombres mientras que el manejo de tensión se encontró fue un tema para las mujeres.
